Elfinwild Lions Club of Pennsylvania

About Us

ELFINWILD LIONS CLUB was conceived early in September 1949 when about a half dozen men of the Elfinwild areas of Shaler Township gathered at the home of Lion Samuel M. Reno, a member of the Etna Lions Club, to discuss the feasibility of forming a new Lions Club for the area.  The meeting was called at the behest of the District Governor Eston O. Poorbaugh.  More gatherings followed, and finally a date was chosen for the start of formal meetings.  Arrangements were made with the ladies of Elfinwild United Presbyterian Church to serve the dinners.

The first meeting was December 14, 1949, and an application was made to Lions International for a charter.  The Charter Night affair, which was the first Ladies Night, took place on February 9, 1950.  The Etna Club was the sponsoring club, and presented the gong and gavel.

The first President was Frank J. Gozon, and the first Secretary was Frank R. Armour, who held that job for many years.

The Elfinwild Lions Club has been home to three Past District Governors: Lions Samuel M. Reno who transferred from Etna, Lions James L. Wrigley who likewise transferred from Etna, and Lion Paul P. Speicher who served as Governor in 1973-74.
